RICHARD BROWN is coming for the National Tennis Championships, and the American has been seeded to win the men's singles title in the Evian-sponsored
two-week event, which serves off on Saturday at Public Courts, Princes Building, Port of Spain. The 24-year-old, whose mother hails from south Trinidad, was last
here in April when he was crowned Tranquillity Open champion. Brown, a three-time Davis Cup player, defeated Ivor Grazette for that prestigious clay-court title
after having lost to the multiple national champion in his only other tournament in this country. Incidentally, that event was the 2004 edition of this very competition.
But after beating Brown in the semi-finals, Grazette lost the title match to nemesis Shane Stone. Grazette, who captured the title last year, should proceed
comfortably to the semis before having anything to worry about. There, the No. 2 seed could face either brother Winnington or Barbadian Ryan Moseley. The last
time they met at this venue, the fifth-seeded Winnington crushed his older brother in the final of the Public Courts Classified Championships two years ago.
Fourth-seeded Moseley, who is studying at the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies, is a Davis Cup player who reached the quarterfinals of
"Tranquil" two years ago. Brown's only real obstacle in getting to the final could come in the semis against 16-year-old Lendl Smith, who stunned Ivor in the final of
the Tobago Open just over a month ago. The third-seeded national under-18 champ is in Curacao this week competing in an International Tennis Federation (ITF)
junior event, and has not entered doubles, which starts on Saturday. With defending champ Carlista Mohammed now based in the United States and Anastasia
Weedon, Dayna Grazette and Raye-Ann Sandy not in the field, it looks impossible to stop last year's "Tranquil" champ Shenelle Mohammed in the women's draw. It
is shocking that Dayna has not entered singles as the reigning "Tranquil" champ is playing both doubles and mixed doubles. The 16-year-old and brother
Winnington are the top seeds in mixed doubles while Dayna and Leah Alcala are seeded behind Shenelle and Farah Chautilal in women's doubles. Chautilal's twin
sister Sarah is not playing doubles but the Tobago Open champ is the No. 2 seed in singles. The Grazette brothers are the overwhelming favourites in doubles and
Michael Cooper should be very hard to beat in veterans' (over-45) singles. Doubles and veterans' singles will occupy the first week of action, and the main
events--men's and women's singles--will get going next week Saturday.
